Resident Artist: Ed Miller

Website: www.edmillersculpture.com

We are pleased to feature Ed Miller, a ceramic and mixed-media sculptor, as one of our inaugural artists in residence. Ed’s art is an exploration of clay focused on the earth and environment. He creates detailed and textured clay sculptures of human, animal, landscape and earth forms.

Since receiving his BFA in 2009, Ed has been pushing the limits of ceramic sculpture by playing with form and texture, and incorporating materials such as wood, steel, leather, animal fur, and bronze. Recently, Ed has been experimenting with an electric pressure washer to dramatically alter the surface of his sculptures. He calls this technique, “aggressive hydro-sculpting.”Using the force of water, he transforms his sculptures by shaping, blasting away, making holes, and drawing onto them-- this is a performance in itself!

During Tom Tom, Ed will engage the community by creating public art and displaying it at both Community Days, and sharing his process through an artist talk and workshop:

Of Fingers, Fur and Fire: The Five-Foot Bear
On April 13th, Ed’s unfired clay sculpture will be at McGuffey. Everyone will be invited to press their finger in to the wet clay to create the texture of the bear’s fur. The bear will return to the Downtown Mall to be on display for all to see in the festival weekend.

Tom Tom Talk
We’re excited to host an hour-long talk by Ed, followed by a Q&A session. Ed will talk about his unique process of creating ceramic sculptures, focusing on his recent public art creations.

Clay Workshop
Ed will conduct a three hour-long clay workshop, demonstrating how to make clay vessels. Participants will make their own clay vessels, which Ed will fire and return to the participants.
