Workshop: Kate Daughdrill

Throughout the weekend of April 18-22, Detroit based artist, Kate Daughdrill, will be creating a series of birdseed prints on the downtown mall and the surrounding streets. The prints will be created from birdseed that is laid onto the ground or other unexpected surfaces through a chipboard stencil. They are typically legible for 2-3 days. Throughout the weekend, the birdseed prints will assert a quiet but strong presence as each phrase exists in several different visual states simultaneously.
In order to share the process with others and to allow the project to continue throughout the entire month of the festival and hopefully into the future, Kate will lead a workshop and a public printing session at the Garage. During the workshop, participants will work together to create new matrices/stencils and then go into the city and print together. The group will discuss ritual, paradox, learning and unlearning, public intimacy, and how we communicate in a city. After generating phrases and sharing them with each other in small groups, Kate will offer a demo on how to make birdseed stencils using pre-cut wooden letters, pencils, chipboard, and exacto knives. The workshop concludes by going out to print throughout the city. The phrases and stencils generated during the workshop will be used during the public printing session that night.
Later that evening, everyone is invited to join in for a public printing session at the Garage. Participants will learn how to make birdseed prints and then go out into the city to print together. We will meet at 6:30pm at the Garage for with more stencil making and dessert and will then go out printing in small groups on the downtown mall and surrounding streets around 8:00pm. Everyone who participates will be encouraged to continue printing the phrases throughout the month if they feel compelled!
