In proud collaboration with the Charlottesville Jazz Society, Tom Tom is presenting Jazz from the front steps of the Jefferson Madison Public Library Downtown.

On Thursday April 26th, The Charlottesville Jazz Society will join The Jefferson Madison Regional Library in our annual celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, with a free live jazz performance and a jazz film screening. This year’s performer is visiting Chicago pianist Lisa McQueen and her quartet, featuring saxophonist Michael Elswick, with Bill Emory on guitar and Mike Taylor on drums.

The music will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of the downtown branch of the Library, and end at 7 p.m.

Shortly after 7, special guest, producer Bill Warrell, will introduce his 2000 film “Jazz Dancing,” which will be shown on the second floor of the Library. Born in Washington, DC, Warrell became a force behind the avant-garde art and music scene, opening D.C. Space (1979), 9:30 Club (1980), and District Curators, Inc (1978). After 25 years as a leader in presenting and producing performing arts for the stage, radio, and video, Warrell began producing documentary and feature films, earning a Master's Degree at the School of Communications, American University in 1997

“Jazz Dancing” chronicles the making of important multi-media works by two brilliant jazz musicians, now deceased: pianist Don Pullen and saxophonist Julius Hemphill. The film focuses on rare footage of Pullen’s collaboration with the Chief Cliff Dancers, and Hemphill’s jazz opera Long Tongues.
